Understanding Neglect

This presentation will review the multiple factors involved in evaluating, and caring for the child diagnosed with neglect. A discussion on why this maltreatment (compared to physical abuse, sexual abuse, ect) is one of the most serious, and it’s potentially causing long term medical and mental health injuries. The presentation will review the evaluations for the different types of neglect (medical, growth, drug exposure, other) and how the multidisciplinary team can work together to assist the child and the family.

Learning outcomes:

  • Better understanding of the different types of neglect
  • Be able to develop cooperative care plan (medical and cps) for neglect child

Medical 101: Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse/Assault

This session is for any medical provider who may have to evaluate children who have been sexually abused or assaulted. It will offer instruction for the basic evaluation, including how to do a good quality exam, indications for further evaluation, and interpretation of findings. This session will be medically oriented but may be useful to other professionals who are required to understand and relate to medical findings.

Objectives

  • Understand the basics of providing a sexual abuse exam for children
  • Understand how to evaluate patient regarding need for further evaluation
  • Understand how to interpret medical exam findings when involved in CSA cases

This session will cover how to make the best use of this valuable resource, from the legal perspective. And will cover how to prepare, survive and succeed as the medical expert. The session will be valuable to anyone involved in the prosecution and investigation process.

Learning Objectives

 

  • Understand how to prepare for medical testimony, including know what the responsibilities of the medical expert are
  • Understand how to coach a medical expert or fact witness leading up to trial
  • Understand how to communicate regarding medical exam as a medical expert or prosecution/investigation
