Student Maltreatment: Reporting, Investigations, and Common Case Scenarios

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

The Student Maltreatment Program at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is responsible for assessing and investigating reports of alleged student maltreatment in Minnesota Public Schools. This presentation will provide an overview of the Student Maltreatment Program and mandated reporting to MDE. Additionally, we will discuss what school professionals and other agencies can expect during MDE’s investigation, what MDE looks at when conducting facility investigations, and potential consequences of our determinations. Finally, we will present information on maltreatment scenarios that have increased in the past two years, and guidance on how to address those types of cases. Some of these include corporal punishment, physical injuries from the use of restrictive procedures, and mental/emotional injury.

Outcomes

  1. Develop an understanding of what the Student Maltreatment Program does and when and how to submit a report.
  2. Learn when and how other individuals and agencies may be involved in MDE’s investigation, including administrators, teachers, medical professionals, social workers, and law enforcement.
  3. Gain an understanding of maltreatment trends and how to proactively address these situations.
